Handwritten autobiography, dated 28 July 1923. He writes about joining the Union Army in Ohio in 1862 and his subsequent service in the Civil War until 1865. He served in the 97th Ohio Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 6th Division, 21st Corps, Army of the Cumberland. He describes numerous battles in which he fought and the heavy casualties his regiment suffered. He was shot "threw the left temple" at the battle of Missionary Ridge. After recovering from his wound he rejoined his regiment.

Smith was a missionary in Oregon and Hawaii. He was sent in 1838 to Oregon by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. In 1842 he became a missionary in Hawaii.
